About NZ Excess Reduction Cover

About NZ rental cars are covered by Standard Motor Vehicle Insurance, however if you have an accident you are liable for any excess. There are three options available, but we recommend you take excess reduction cover and reduce your liability to zero. The following options are available.

$2,000 Excess Cover

All About NZ rental cars come with Standard Motor Vehicle Insurance (at no extra charge). The basic Standard Motor Vehicle Insurance has an excess liability (a.k.a. a deductible) of $2,000.

In the event that your rental car is damaged or involved in an accident, you are liable for the first $2,000 of any damage costs. And you’re liable for the excess regardless of whether you are 'at fault' or not.

That means we’ll charge you up to $2,000 when you return the car. Then we’ll get the car fixed and refund the difference between the total cost and the excess amount charged (if applicable). The $2,000 excess is the maximum amount you will be charged.

$500 Excess Cover

All About NZ rental cars come with Standard Motor Vehicle Insurance (at no extra charge). You can choose to reduce your excess liability to $500 with this option.

To reduce your excess liability to $500 simply select the second ‘Excess Reduction’ option on the ‘Extras’ step when making your reservation.

By selecting this option you reduce your maximum excess liability to $500. As the renter you are liable for the excess regardless of whether you are 'at fault' or not.

When the vehicle is repaired and the final costs are known, Apex will refund the difference between the total cost and the excess amount charged, if applicable. The $500 excess is the maximum amount you will be charged.

Zero Excess Cover

If you want to drive around the country without a worry in the world, take our zero excess coverage. You get the same Standard Motor Vehicle Insurance, but you’ll have peace of mind knowing that if you have an accident or damage the rental car you’re fully covered. Zero Excess Cover means zero liability.

To reduce your excess liability to $0 simply select the third ‘Excess Reduction’ option on the ‘Extras’ step when making your reservation.

We strongly recommend all renters take out Full Cover Excess Reduction / Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) coverage for peace of mind motoring.
